Had the timing chain, guides or whatever go out on the left side of the original 4.0L OHV engine, quoted a price of 1000 to repair, if no other damage was present. A friend of mine found another 4.0L SOHC engine which I bought, at the time I didn't know there where two type of engine (OHV vs SOHC).

How hard is it to put the SOHC engine in and what kinds of problems might I encounter?

Thanks

Something doesnt sound right there. The OHV doesnt have a separate chain and guide on each side. It only has 1 chain. Its a non-interference engine, so there shouldnt be any other damage.

I wouldn't swap in a SOHC, but it depends on what you want to do with it. I enjoy the big low end punch that the OHV has. Good luck man.

They both have low end torque. The OHC 4.0 has more top end tq/hp than the OHV. Very doable and a good upgrade. Dig through the tech library, I imagine a writeup is there for you.

I have done the swap.
Both motors feel about the same until you get around 4000 rpm or so. Thats when you can tell there is a SOHC under the hood.
