Hi,

I have a 1999 Ranger 4.0L OHV that's leaking coolant. In another thread I've gotten some very helpful recommendations on what to look for.

As a part of the leak fix I want to remove and replace my Crankshaft Pulley/Balancer. I see tons of very reasonably priced tool sets on Amazon. But I've not found a single one that says it will work for my 4.0 liter engine.

Anybody have a recommendation on which tool set to buy?

Thanks for any help! Russ

Any cheapo steering wheel puller will work.

Take two bolts off your AC compressor and use those to thread into the pulley - they are about the right length and are the correct thread pitch.

Keep the pulley bolt threaded in a few turns and push against that, NOT the threads in the crankshaft.

The 4.0L crank pulley has a flange that covers the front of the crank snout (almost like a built in washer), you must have the bolt in the hole (or something similar) to push against.

Thanks! Greatly appreciated.

Followup: Then just use washers and the ac bolts to install the new one?

No need, you can get the pulley started onto the crankshaft by hand and then just use the pulley bolt to suck it the rest of the way on. Use the old bolt for that, remove it when the pulley is installed and then use your new bolt to torque it down.

Terrific! Thanks again.

Are the balancer bolts TTY one time use on these? Odd item to replace in most cases, I'd think.
