Hey,

I have a 91 Explorer 4x4 with a 4.0 and a 5 speed. This vehicle is a daily driver and I do some mild off roading. The truck is stock other than 31x10.50 Maxis BigHorns , which I love, and still gets 20+MPG dispite the fact it is so worn out.

This motor needs rebuilt since it is starting to smoke and has a ton of oil leaks. I replaced the rockers and pushrods a year and a half ago and it silenced many of the ticks but I still have one or two ticking. I plan to rebuild the motor this summer and I am wanting to know how hard it is to visually identify the bad lifters. I have a slight tone defness that keeps me from hearing this tick well enough with a scope to find it that way. Can I identify the bad ones during disasembly? Can they be rebuilt? I am just getting started in my research for this so any links to complete engines, rebuild kits, cams, lifters, head porting guides or threads would be awsome as well. I have done some searching and will continue to do so.

My end goal for the truck is something along the line of the Comp cams High energy 256HR cam, some mild porting and gasket matching and headers and exhaust. Looking to improve eficeincy as much as posible, pick up a little pep along the way. Tires wont get any bigger, but a locker may get added down the road.

Any help I could get would be great. Thanks.

If theres a napa or fisher store around they can price you for the whole rebuild. Ur motor might still be tikn cuza the worn out oil pump. I rebuilt the top of mine and put a oil pump in around 209k and through headers on. Damn the power change.

I am actually thinking of gettign either the crate motor at Napa or one of the two crate motors listed on rock Auto. I sat down and came up with about $5,000 worth of parts I should give it and think I just may rather than replace it. I figure I put 5 grand in it I can drive it another 10 years or so.

Did the headers free up some noticeable power? Do anything for MPG?

replace the lifters.
