Tomorrow I am going to the junk yard to pick up an intake for my truck, with the goal being to restore the EGR system so that I am 100% legal on my emissions controls again.

We have a projected high of about 10 degrees tomorrow and I am hoping to be long gone from the yard before it gets that late in the day. This is an in-and-out, not a shopping trip.

So here is the question. I currently have a 92 non-EGR engine, aluminum intake. I am running 94 Explorer harness and Ranger computer. Is there any reason I couldn't or shouldn't get a plastic intake if I find one of those before I find an aluminum EGR unit? Is one or the other preferred?

The only difference I could see would be the temperature difference from aluminum vs plastic, I don't see why you couldn't get a plastic one.

I don't see why not either, but if I am going to drive an hour each way, then run around in single-digit temps looking for one, I want to know for sure I am grabbing the right piece.

Is it possible to swap the components out? Like taking the stuff off a aluminum one and putting it on a plastic one?

I would assume aluminum would be ideal, due to you already having one and it can function a little bit cooler than plastic, but the temperature change would be so small I doubt it would have any effect at all.

The IAC does not interchange between the aluminium and plastic one. As far as anything else goes I don't know. Might as well just stick with an aluminum one as they don't have the tendency to leak like the plastic ones

That is the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks.

Alright, thread has now outlived it's usefulness. I went, I found, I lost feeling in my legs, I returned, I cut a wrench in half, I installed. All working well.

I've gotta know: WHY did you cut a wrench in half? For the EGR fitting or something?

Yes. Surprisingly the shop electronics specialist (me) does not have a 25mm crowsfoot in his tool set, so my options were to

A) remove front drive shaft for clearance

B) keep dicking around with the pliers that were getting somewhere a about 1/4 snail's pace

or

C) get the torch out, and cut my POS Blackhawk wrench that I have $0.00 in to make it short enough to be able to turn.

Took longer to cut the wrench and dress the ends than it did to finish tightening the EGR fitting. The wrench said "forged steel" but it cut like aluminum. That wrench was too long for everything I have ever tried to use it for anyway.
