We have an 1991 Areostar auto. 4.0 going in an 87 Ranger W/5 speed. The donor is gone and we didn't save the computer. To be clear we are using the 5 speed trans. Also we found that our 2.9 had a computer for a 3.0 Taurus/Sable And if anything it seems to be like a performance upgrade. Is there something like this that we can/should be looking for while searching for a computer? Will an automatic equipped computer work with major mods.?

You need to use a computer and wiring harness from a manual transmission vehicle.

This page has some computer numbers which might help

I think your '87 should have dual fuel pump setup which should be fine to use with the 4.0l

Fuel, Oil, Temp gauges should be fine as well, although Battery light or volt gauge may need a wiring change at alternator.
Speedometer is mechanical so will be fine
Tach is usually OK if output is available on computer

Forgot to mention it is a full time race truck. Full rewire in progress. I am only concerned with computer and injection wiring.

That is pretty much all the computer and it's wiring does, the fuel injection.
MAF(or MAP), O2, IAT, ECT and TPS sensors, are all needed if using the stock system.
And IAC valve if you want good idle cold and warm.

I assume no EGR is wanted so computer should be from vehicle without EGR system or you will get a continuous CEL.

Good read here on Ford EFI
