Okay... i dont recall ever seeing a 4.0 sohc with a manual tranny stock from ford i could be wrong... well anyways Do the 4.0 sohc and 4.0 OHV share the same flywheels? can i take a 4.0 ohv flywheel and stick it on my SOHC im gonna stick the mustang 5.0 manual tranny on the race truck ;brownbag;

there were numerous 4.0 SOHC's with a manual transmission behind them, espically in the FX4 Level II's from '02-'04.

The 4.0 OHV and the 4.0 SOHC have totally different flywheels. They are balanced different and have different bolt pattern.

Ive even seen a Manual SOHC Explorer, I had no idea they put a stick in an '02 + sploder so I was suprised.

Given that the 4.0 is 'internally' balanced - there is no difference in balance between the flywheels / flexplates - as for the difference in bolt patterns, the 98-00 4.0 OHV has the same bolt pattern (8 bolt) as the 02+ SOHC - the pre 98 flywheels/flexplates are 6 bolt.

Ford also used the 8 bolt on some later '97 4.0's. That is what I was told by a couple dealerships....

Very possible as they were probably phasing in the new crankshafts for the full 98 run as quantities of the old ones ran out.................I've yet to encounter any.

I've personally found TWO 8-bolt flywheels on 1997 Rangers.

Don't recall exact production dates, but both were later in
the year (may-ish for one, later for the other)

However there's no reason to believe that junkyard polling is
in any a diffinitive indication, either truck COULD have had a later production dealer replacement engine, etc...
