I have a 00 ranger with a bad 4.0. I came acros a 96 mazda with a 4.0. Is this a good engine swap ? thanks for any replys

You would probably be better off with a newer engine. The styles of engines have changed over the years. The 96 will be a OHV pushrod engine where yours is possibly a SOHC?

yeah, find a newer motor.

96 will work in a 2000, you will have to swap the fuel rail and injectors, and the wiring harness along with some sensors. You're also going to need the flywheel or flexplate from the 96 as well, they swapped from a 6 to an 8 bolt crank in 97

That's correct, an '00 4.0 SOHC is quite different than a '96 4.0 OHV. A swap is possible but not as simple as swapping in another SOHC. +1 on a newer motor.

'00 was not a SOHC engine, it was the last year for the pushrod powerplant.

Alright well the 4.0 article in the tech library is somewhat misleading, says the SOHC replaced the OHV in 1998. My mistake, I'll shutup now...

you are somewhat right, the sohc motor was available in the explorers starting in 1998, the ranger got switched in 01

did the swap over the weekend. runs fine. fired right off. didnt yet drive it the 65 miles for computer to start the diagnostics. fairly easy swap. ill know in 65 miles or so. thanks for all who replyed. scott
