I have a 4.0 from a 1993 Ranger that I am selling. A guy emailed me and asked if it would fit a 99 ranger.

I know the transmissions were different between the years and such. I'm not however sure if the engines have and dramatic changes that would cause it not to fit his ranger.

Sorry if this is such a dumb question. I looked here but don't see anything that claims it is not possible or that it is. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4_0_Page.shtml

Does the guy have a 4.0 in his Ranger? If not...NO. He will have to add more then a trans...Wire harness has to be added to use the 4.0.

The guts changed a bit in 95. He would be able to bolt it up and run it, but it wouldn't ever be quite right.

Yea he has a 4.0 already.

Ok thanks alot. I'll let him know.

Yes, if he swaps intakes, upper and lower, it will be fine

Ok ty, On another stupid question... Is there any visual difference on the intakes between the ohv and sohc ? Because I have a 1998 and it looks identical to the one I took out of the 1993.

And actually the engine in the 93 was replaced before I had owned it. So I've gotten this curiosity that maybe the engine is newer than the vehicle itself was and may be what he is looking for.

This is a link to the craigslist post I have made that has some images of the engine if that helps.

Yes, and SOHC wasn't offered in Ranger until 2001.

Difference in '93 and '98 intake are 40psi fuel pressure with return on '93 and 65psi no return on '98

Different pistons and combustion chambers after 95, block was recast in 97 for better NVH quality, 98+ have an 8-bolt crank vs the older 6-bolt. Also, I think the hole for the cam sensor changed somewhere.

I would be asking how long that engine has been out of the truck, and where was it stored... if it has sat outside like that for more than a day or two, I would be leery of buying it unless you need a boat anchor...

eh, nevermind... I see now that you made the craigslist ad... so you should know how long it has sat :)

I have decided since the engine was replaced to go ahead and look up the casting numbers on the engine. This is what I have come across.

It seems to read either :
RDD57761 or ROD57761 It's really hard to read as the stamp is only half pressed from the looks of it.

Wondered if someone could decipher this or direct me to where I can search it myself?

Also this stamp is located to the upper left side of the flywheel.

Here a look here for location of casting numbers: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/40rebuild.htm

Thanks. Not to sure how much that will help since the engine has everything on it still. But I will do my best to look over it and see.

I'm just trying to find out now the age of the motor since it isn't the original and I saw a area when googled that said that number I showed was the date cast.

But nowhere I have seen has a range that goes all the way to "R"
