I'm new to this forum. I was a member at a few other ranger forums but the lack of knowledge and activity on most of the others was disappointing to say the least. There is a lot of knowledge and useful info on this site so I think I'm in the right place.
I'm doing a swap from a 2.3 to a 4.0 from a 93 explorer on my 94 ranger. The 2.3 and trans are already gone. The 4.0 is on a hoist and I'm doing some prep work. I don't think my rear main is leaking. (the flywheel is still bolted up, but I don't see anything other than normal gunk buildup on the bottom of the motor) but I was considering changing it anyway. I actually bought the seal already, 10 bucks from autozone. But I've read conflicting things about installing it. I've heard some say it just taps right in like an axle seal, and I could just use a pipe to tap it in, and I've heard some say you need to build or buy a special tool and it needs to go in beyond flush with the block to a certain degree. If the latter is true, is it even worth doing if its not leaking? The motor has just under 100k on it.
Also, I bought the engine and trans separate, and so I don't have the bolts that mate the trans to the motor. Does anyone know the length and thread pitch of these bolts? Autozone doesnt list them and a quick search came up with nothing. Are they all even the same size and length or are some different lengths due to the starter and whatnot?
Any help or info would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
