I guess its time I ask. I've searched for a while and it seems there's no straight forward answer. I'm swapping a 97 explorer 4.0 into my 96 ranger, and need an ecu that will work.

I assume the year of my truck is irrelevant, since the ECU controls the engine/trans. So I think I need an ECU that will work with a 97 Explorer OHV 4.0L engine, and an m5od trans.

Am I right? What ECU number would I need?

I believe that you just plug your harness into the motor and turn the key. The newer 4.0 should have all the same sensors and work without any issues.

Someone please chime in if I'm wrong please.

My ranger had a 3.0.

You need to try and find a 96 4.0 engine / tranny harness and PCM - it will be a direct plug-in into the 96 Ranger body / harness and would basically start up and run the Exp. engine with no problems.

The Exp engine harness has a couple of different pinouts than the Ranger body harness.
