4.0 compressor on 5.0 bracket

Say a '90 4.0 compressor on a 5.0 Explorer bracket, has anyone tried it?

I should have yesterday in the JY but it didn't occur to me how similar the mounting looked until I got home and was looking at pics.

Wondering how the four mounting bolts line up and if the pulley lines up.

The 4.0 OHV and the 5.0 compressors for the 97 Explorer are the same. That's nut surprising as as those engines shared a lot of FEAD components after 93. Once they were all on serp belts the 3.0, 4.0 5.0 and 5.8 all used the same alternator and PS pump.

They use the same manifold fittings on the back too or are they different?

Not that it really matters a whole lot, if I can throw a 4.0 compressor at it I will just order one of those.

The manifold block has a suction and discharge line as one piece there are compressor adapters available. This place is amazing you can build your own lines and find somebody to crimp them. https://coldhose.com/specialty-fittings/compressor-adapters.html

It was a just for future reference thing.

If down the road someone asks about how to make the A/C work with their Explorer compressor, if using the V6 lines would be an option or if they changed the manifold fittings on the compressor which I could see them doing.

Making A/C hoses is kind of a dark science nobody knows about, we have made a few lines for NLA stuff. A 20' long 3/4" suction line for a forage harvester was about the biggest PITA one.

I think the 4.0 manifold/hoses will work for mine but the suction hose will probably be too short since the Ex has the compressor on the bottom of the engine rather than the top like a 4.0. Having the bent tubes will look/fit much nicer than just hose and fittings too.

The manifold block has to be the same. I looked the parts up on Rock for the 4.0 OHV and 5.0, they were the same part number.

The SOHC compressor will be different since it is in a different spot.

For your truck I'd use the 4.0 lines. The 5.0 lines will be longer to account for all the vehicles it was in stock being wider.

For sure.

The 5.0 lines use a different fitting at the condenser too so I would still have to cannibalize a OHV hose set to make it work anyway. That was my original plan, I figured they would have had to change the compressor at some point between here and there.

To not sidetrack the other guys thread I quoted ya here:

To use the 4.0 lines you do nee the 4.0 condenser, but be aware that those hook ups are not in the same spot as the 1st gen condensers, and you are going to have to cut your core support a little to make it fit.

I suppose for the line coming out of the driver's side of the condenser? Any pics of required surgery?

First gen compressors mount differently and the hoses are totally different so I am going to have to color outside of the lines somewhere.

I like the routing of the second gen condenser which is why I am going that route. 4.0 lines coming closer to fitting and the 4.0/5.0 compressors being interchangeable is a huge bonus.

I don't have any pics at the moment. I think most of the cutting had to be done on the passenger side, but I don't remember for sure. It's where the panel is stamped inward in the middle to direct air flow over the radiator. There is a large "fin" that points toward the rear of the vehicle. The top two inches or so have to be removed or the line connection doesn't fit.

IIRC the driver's side is fine because both connections where there on the 1st gen.

All the first gens I have seen have both fittings on the passenger side. The 2.9 second gens seem to have followed suite.



Depending on how things shake out those fins are going to be in trouble anyway.
