I'm looking to put together a cold air intake. Is their a place that sells a kit. I dont want a cheap PVC looking thing if I can avoid it, any intakes that are interchangeable. Btw I've got a 91 ranger.

Save your money, the stock intake is cold air and the filter flows more than a 4.0 will ever use.

probably, but I just want to dress the engine bay up a little bit

I cant find anything at either of these sites, I have a 91 ranger , do I need to search a different year and model

I just bought a 90 and looked and asked on several forums. I ended up staying with the stocker and putting in a stock replacement K&N because nobody has an after market CAI. Several folks said to build one, but with all the sensors and stuff I just figured stay with the stocker. It sucks, but I think we're stuck!

Stay with the OEM intake and paper filter! The only thing that the K&N's pass more than the OEM paper filter is dirt and oil!!!

with a 91 your going to have to just buy the cone filter and fab something or just get a replacement filter

Only if you're doing something wrong. I've been using K&N's for as long as I can remember and they work excellently. I've read I don't know how many articles on them and all were totally positive. If they didn't work, then how come so many other companies are now making them and so many race teams, including major off-road team, are using them and have been for several decades?

Stock paper elements are fine for putting around town but you'll get more air with a gauze type element. Nothing wrong with oil either, every dirt-bike filter is oiled foam. Even the old Chevy air filter was noting more than a can with a quart of oil in it and the air went through it. Still one of the best car air filters made, just too messy.

Your right, the K&N was invented after the paper filters would plug up in no time in races like Baja! The K&Ns wouldn't plug up, but guess where the dust was going? The engines used in these races are rebuilt after every race, so they don't have to run 100K + miles!

The OEM paper filters are designed to flow way more air than the engines will pull, so there is no advantage (only disadvantages) to using the K&N filter!
If the K&N didn't pass dirt and oil, why are there so many complaints about MAF sensors, IAC valves, and gummed up throttle bodies from using K&N air filters?

K&N is very aware of this, or they wouldn't put this in their warranty statement (from their website):

K&N will not be responsible for any other expenses incurred by the customer under the terms of this warranty, nor shall it be responsible for any damages either consequential, special, contingent, or otherwise; or expenses or injury arising directly or indirectly from the use of the K&N Air Filter.

Well, you have your beliefs and I have mine. Every article I've read in motorcycle magazines, off-road magazines, and hot rod magazines say they flow better and give cleaner air. Same for the TV shows that have done the tests on them. I've used them on every veh I've ever owned, for probably over 20 years, and have never had a problem with them. I've also checked with others who race, ride, etc, and everyone has recommended them and have had no problems.

Hey, they have a million mile warranty. If their stuff didn't work it would void the car's warranty. I like em! :)

Umm, aftermarket parts are not allowed to void a complete vehicle warranty, but if you go to the dealer with a blow-by problem and they find all this goopy gritty pink goop in the intake manifold, do YOU think they will pay for that?

Of course a K&N filter isn't going to affect a blown rear end or a slipping transmission. But a shortened engine life?

And why the HELL would ANYONE want to "dress up" an engine with a drop in filter that you can't even see? Or with an aftermarket cold^H^H^H^H warm air intake that doesn't do anything. It's like putting a "Hey, I'm a sucker!" sticker on the window.

And you'll get more power from a "Type R" sticker. Every Honda owner knows that.

....they flow better....

Again, you are correct, all you have to do is hold them up to a light source, and you can see the holes in the filter media! But, if the OEM paper filter will
flow way more air than the engine will pull, do you think you will get more air flow with a K&N? That's why I made the statement all the K&N will flow more than the OEM paper filter is dirt and oil! And chicken wire will actually flow more air than a K&N!!!:):)

Spectre Performance makes a universal kit. You buy the angles you need and put it together yourself. they also have cone style filters. It looks great. You can hear the motor suckin air. It's what i did to my '91. The filter opening is between the frame rails on the driver side. It requires lenghting the MAF wires but it's worth it.
