Does anybody have a trick for removing the dowels from the block?

I put in a bolt(or small socket) that barely fits inside the dowel and wiggle it back and forth

If you are getting new dowels then put in a socket or bolt that barely fits inside the dowel and the use vise grips to clamp on to the outside of dowel and then a pry bar or ?? to lift up on the vise grips
These can sometimes be reused, judgement call, I would just get new ones

And you can just use a punch to collapse the dowel inward, for sure not reusable, of course, lol

if you have a set of fine thread taps I would try to tap them. them insert a bolt and pry/hammer it out.

have a drill bit that fits snug in one? put smooth end in and clamp the dowel to it, then pull.

if there is enough room drill a 1/8 hole thru it, insert something and pull.
use a washer to protect the surface.

last resort, do you have a tubing flare tool? the kind with 2 bars? does one of the holes fit the dowel?

this is the sort of problem where you have to get creative, look at all your tools & "stuff" and see what can be adapted.

Tap inside of dowel, insert bolt, remove with vicegrips and slide hammer. I have to do it a few times a month these days.

To reinstall in the block shim up a head bolt with nuts or lots of washers and run the bolt in.

Thanks for the replies. Like the idea of drilling the hole but these things are harder than the hubs oh hell. Destroyed a good tap. Will take a look at the flaring tool. I have a couple of optional sizes there. We will see what tomorrow brings and yes I have a new set coming.

If you already ordered replacements and don't need to save the old ones clamp them as tight as you can with some vice grips and twist them out.

Thanks for all the reply’s. Got the dowels out this morning. A little PB Blaster overnight and turned down the end of a piece of re-bar to a tight inside fit and a set of five grips as tight as these hands could get them and they twisted right out. It is always nice to meet people smarter than you. Thanks for the instillation advice.
