Today I was going down the free way and pushed the gas, it felt like I hit neutral, as soon as I let off the gas it went back into od and when I eased into the throttle it started acting normal again. I then got off the freeway and when I stopped at the light at the end of the off ramp, nothing nadda no go. I shut the truck off put on my 4 ways. I waited about 15 minutes and decide to try one more time before calling a tow truck. So it hesitated but went into gear and shifted through all gears with slight hesitation in each one. I than did a trans flush and fill, just to see. I do the flush and fill and the hesitation is almost gone, but I have to manually shift into od. Its weird cause I can start in normal drive no problems shift up to third no issues, and then manually put it in od and its all good, but if I put it in od to start its like its in neutral. I figure my trans is prolly toast and needs a rebuild anyways, but it just seems so weird I've never had a trans act like this before. Do you guys have any ideas on whats wrong or could cause this?

sounds like thats what happened to mine i overhauled it and the converter had damage so it was replaced and the pump too it was letting fluid go back so it didnt have pressure to shift

Sounds like OD sprag is bad or getting bad..in od the od sprag holds and in D or low the overrunning clutches turn on.

Well I did some searching and found a manual transmission at my local yard for 300. They said they had a few manual rangers out in the yard so I can rob the clutch master and slave and pedal from their. Now I'm a bit confused on a few parts of this. The manual is from the same year truck as I have a 90. Now will I piss my computer off by pulling the automatic, or will it be ok? Also will I have to change my drive shafts?

I put a Mazda manual trans in my 89 4X4 2.9L Ranger and kept the auto computer without anything bad happening. Some posts say it will throw codes, but I never checked that so I don't know (or care). There is also something about the manual computer shutting down the injectors when you shift resulting in about 1/2 mpg better mileage than when leaving the auto computer in. I don't think that is enough to worry about; just make sure your tire pressure is right and drive reasonably and it more than makes up for it.:icon_cheers:
