4.0 auto to manual

i am thinking of swapping from auto to manual in my 01 4.0 liter 4x4, what are my options for trannys to put in and what else will i need to do the swap

Manual trans with tail housing -4x4 tranny assembly

Wiring harness Pedal assembly
Master clyinder
Clutch resevoir
Clutch line
Slave cylinder
Clutch kit
Floor plate with hole cut for manual trans shifter
Plastic piece with rubber boot that goes on top of the floor plate
Trans shifter
Shifter extension (If body lifted)
Shifter Ball
Shifter Boot

You will need a 4x4 Mazda M5OD-R1 transmission, the pedal assembly, slave and master cylinder, flywheel, clutch, starter and PCM.

It's my buddy's '01 4.0 4x4 auto to manual swap thread that I had a HEAVY hand in. Has ALL the info you'll need. I HIGHLY suggest finding yourself a '01 4.0 4x4 MANUAL engine/trans electrical harness and swapping that in. We made his existing harness work out by confusing the PCM to thinking it's still an auto....but was stuck with the 3000rpm rev limiter until we found the correct PCM. You also need to get yourself a '01 4.0 4x4 MANUAL PCM, then a tow to the dealer for a PATS flash. You're stuck getting an '01+ 4.0 trans too.


I've helped with two ranger auto to manual swaps, this one being the 2nd and alot more complicated....but the swap is pretty much straight forward. One friend on his '98 4.0 4x4 had about $2000 into his swap(he didn't shop around at all, just ordered it and daddy got a bill). The linked thread above only has just about a grand into his....INCLUDING the hurst shifter.
