I tried to put this in the right spot.. Lol..

So my truck has a 4.0 in it that was swapped long before I got it. I've always figured I'd just swap in a bigger motor but then I started really thinking about it.

I'm running 35s on there and the thing is a dog. It's got 4.10s in both axles. If I regear to a more proper gear will that solve my power issues? Or do you think swapping a motor might still be the best option.

Keep in mind, I don't have a lot of money to work with and I figure if regearing will work, at least for a while then I won't have to worry about the motor until it dies? As is, it runs just fine, but it takes a lot to push those tires. Also, I figure I'll have to regear anyway, right?

Regearing will do the trick.
If you feel it is a dog now, 5.13 gears should do the trick.

4.88's or 5.13's will definitely do the trick. if you do more off road 5.13's is the way to go

I wish there was a way to test out gears. I mean the truck will be predominantly an offroad toy but I want to have the option of using it as a DD in the winter or something without it sucking down a ton of fuel.. What do you guys think would be the best gear option?

I have a D35 ttb/8.8 rear combo.. Do they even make 5.13s for these? Where do I buy them? I only found one place that sells gears over 4.10s and they don't have 5.13s

Lol ugh.

Jim lists 4.88 and 5.13 gears for both the d35 and 8.8.

The difference between 4.88 and 5.13 is about 5%, hardly enough to notice a difference unless you are counting your miles per tank with your trip odometer...

If it is mainly an off-road rig, with occasional winter/my other car is busted DD use, i would say go with the 5.13s. If you go with the 4.88 you might question not having that 5% more power to the tires.

Oh thanks so much.. You're awesome. I always forget about the parts sold here. :icon_thumby:

Sorry to bump this but I don't want to start a new thread...

A friend of mine mentioned to me that if I put 5.13s in there, I wouldn't be able to run 60mph on the interstate... Is there truth to this? Most of my driving around here is interstate. Will it physically not be able to run that fast? Or will it hurt it at all?

I run 4.88's and 35's. The 4.0 does a pretty good job of pushing it down the road. However, if I was to do it again, I would of gone with 5.13's.

Check out the RPM and gear calculators on this site, 5.13's and 35's are very freeway drivable.

4:10 versus 5:13

4:10 versus 5:13==== 25% more rpm. So if you are running a certain speed at 2,000 rpm now when the gears are changed you will be running 2500 at that same speed.
You should hiway it and see what your rpm are and then go from there..
REMEMBER when using large tires it is always advisable to have more rpm at any given speed than the stock rpm was at that speed. It truly does take more horses to twist them big tires than it does the little ones.
I am a big fan of rpm's.

You will be able to hum down the highway without any issues with 5.13's!

I'm running 4.56's and 36's with the 4.0L and A4LD...its ok but not great. I ended up with those gears because I listened to all the oldtime techs at work telling me 5.13 would be too much gear and it would be useless on the street...

Ok good, thanks guys... I just don't want to kill the motor TOO soon. Lol
