3rd gen idle problem *fixed*

I have been getting some problems from my new to me ranger. It wants to idle at 2000 and in between shifting gears it doesn't go lower than 2000. It takes a few to get back down to normal idle when I am not moving; but it doesn't go down steady, it goes down in steps. Not sure what it could be.

oh and when I start it up to let it get warm, it starts to make a humming noise that kinda sounds like a shop-vac not sure if that is related to anything to the idle problem.

any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Its a 96 4.0L manual trans Ranger.

It may have a vacuum leak or a bad IAC.

Easy to check the IAC. unplug the IAC and if the idle drops. you know the iac is either stuck on or the computer is forcing it to stay on. which involves more investigation for the second reason.

I got it fixed, it is a lot better now. I got some new stuff out of the junkyard, got the IAC out of a 2001-2003 Ranger and the TPS out of a Explorer Sport 2001-ish. So I geuss the junkyards are still useful to me.
