35s on the ranger

I was thinking about putting 35s under my ranger, but my friend told me that would be a bad idea, because id have to gear it down a little bit. Is that true or could I go and put the 35s on it and still have enough power to use them to their full potential?

Well, go outside and read your door tag. Look for the axle code and post it, then look up on here (tech library) what gearing you have.

My guess is that it would be sluggish. Very, sluggish.

Instead of putting different gears in, you might want to look into upgrading your axles. Just make sure you get one with the right gearing for what you want.

Even with a 4.0L, 35s will feel sluggish with stock gears. You're going to want to have at least 4.56...probably more like 4.88.

ya, 4.88 is dead on for a 4.0 and anything else, id go ahead and go with 5.13s depending on what axles you have. it looks like you have an 8.8 and a dana 35 so you should be alright.

I drove a 4.0L with 33s and stock (3.55) gearing for awhile and that wasn't fun. 35s would be really bad. Best gears for 35s and a 4.0L are 4.88s. I have 5.13s and that's a bit too deep.

Can you see the little metal tag attached to your differential cover? (rear) it should tell you what gearing the axle has and the axle. You may need to take the bolt its attached to off and clean the tag in order to read it.

Thanks guys, been alot of help I think Im just going to get some 33's and do the gearing later on, what gears should I get if I have a 3.0? Like "mayito" said all im doing is going like sugar sand and light mud

if that's all you plan on doing then all you need is 33"s

Some people like the bigger tires better, looks wise. Honestly, I think a ranger with a decent amount of lift on 33's still looks well.. small.

Actually, speaking of lift.. how much lift do you have or plan to have?

A 3.0 isn't going to like 33s either if you don't regear.

4.88 for 33s on the 3.0L, 5.13 for 35s.
