Alright,

I'm building an 89 2WD Ranger that's going on 35's. I'm 99% sure that the 7.5" rear won't handle them reliably, but I'm asking anyway, since it's only gong to be behind a little stock 2.9L.

Thanks in advance.

*IF* the axle will handle the tires, it will recieve a traction-lok differential with 4.11 or maybe a little lower gears btw.

i have 33s with the stock 7.5" with 3.73 gears and 3 missing ring bolts

7.5 can handle 35's.... if you DD it only... no wheeling... You're going to need atleast 4.56 gears...

Best bet is an 8.8 swap... and atleast 4.88 gears...

hey thanks for the replies guys,

i heard that the ranger can really benefit from the next step up in gearing. so, my 89 has 3.73's, right? if it does, then i would want 4.10's right? but that's all with stock tires. so then, if i wanted to keep that same performance with 35's, wouldnt i need like 5.13's? about where would my rpms be at 70 on the highway?

and by "no wheeling" do you mean NO WHEELING, or "minimal" wheeling? i mean, no mud or any crazy rocks and shit, but how about just light wheeling in the local sandpit and mountain trails (mild stuff)?

Say goodbye to it. I have blown 3 7.5's with only 33's one set of 3.73's and 2 4.56's. I am swapping in a 31 spline 8.8 now because of that.

Personally I've gone through 3 7.5's, not including the 1 that was blown when I got the truck...

I blew up the spiders a few weeks ago with a 2.3 4cyl, and 31's....

It can work if you do NO wheeling, and take it easy.... Oh, and only do it open, no Locker or L/s...

I'd really suggest an 8.8 and do it right the first time...

Mmmmm... Trac-loc gone horribly wrong :p

:icon_thumby:...maybe a lil deeper. i suggest possibly a quick lock or detriot.

ok. 8.8 it is. i really need a locker or atleast an lsd

now that im getting this far into things, i want the GOOD 8.8 (31 spline). so, what are the donor vehicles for such a unit?

and, what is involved in the swap? is it bolt-in or what? isnt it gonna be a little wider?

lastly, what gears should i run for 35's plus a little more getup-and-go than stock?

thanks

just do the axle swap. i was only running 33's on my stock 7.5
and now i am in the process of swapping in an 8.8 because of it.
if i were you i would go to a junkyard close by, i got my complete 8.8 of a 92 exploder, came with leaf springs, sway bar, and everything for $81. it would have only been 31 if i had pulled it off the vehicle myself.

this is what your ring gear will look like when you break it and it sends the splines THROUGH the diff cover.

just look around, and see what you can find. shouldnt be hard.

91-94 explorers have 31 spline 8.8's with drum brakes, 95-01 have 31 spline 8.8's with disc brakes. FX4 LVLII rangers will have a 31 spline 8.8's that will bolt right into your truck. With the explorer axle you will have to cut off the spring perches and weld them onto the topside of the axle tube.
