I have heard 2 different sides to this one on other forums. So I am asking this forum the same question. I have stock 4:10 gears, limited slip rear. Can I run 35" tires on these gears without shredding them. I was talking to a buddy of mine today about running 35's with the stock gears and he said it would not shred a thing. I have heard the opposite from other people saying 35's would kill them.

So what is the right answer? I know that if I upgrade gears, that is the safe bet. But just normal driving on 35's with stock gears? Will it hurt anything?

It won't shred the gears, no. But it'll put a huge load on the transmission. If you have a manual, you'll be hard on the clutch. If you have an auto, it'll be hard on the torque converter and will likely always be looking for the right gear on the highway. I wouldn't think it would be a very pleasant experience.

Ok, I have an automatic. Will tuning it help anything?

I really don't know. I just know that running those tires on those gears would put a strain on the transmission. According to the "gears needed after tire change" calculator in the tech library, and assuming your original tires were approximately 31's, running 35's with 4.10 gears would give an actual ratio of 3.63:1, which is less-than-desirable.

you want 4.56+. why? power. you can burn your trans up quick if you try to use the wrong gears. now 4.10's wont KILL it, but it wont be a rocket off the line. Go for it man.

Can you? Yes. Do you want to? Probably not.

I ran 35's with 3.55's for over a year....was it ideal...hell no. Did it work? Yeup.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. Right now I am running 33's for 3 years and the truck seems great with them. My buddy has 35's that are pretty much new and I can get them dirt cheap. I'll give it a shot and re-gear once I saved up the dough. Thanks again guys, any more input is greatly appreciated as well!

It is no different than running 33's with 3.73's and plenty of people do that combo. I didn't like 33's and stock 4.10's went to 4.88's right off the bat. I now have 5.38's and 38's :) I wouldn't personally run 35's and 4.10's, but it will work.

I've ran my stock 327s with 35s, 4.0 ohv 5r55e auto. Only got about 10-12 mpg, but it wasn't bad. The 4.0 has quite a bit of torque to get it moving. I went to 456s and my mpg went up to 17s, along with easier takeoff...

I'm running 37" with 4.10 and yes highway driving sucks. Tops out at 75mph but it's do able. I would recommend a higher number gear if you can afford it.

It puts unnecessary load on your drivetrain, lowers your overall mpg, messes up your speedo calibration+mileage counter, and takes away any grunt your truck may have had with stock tires. A proper regear will do wonders.
