I've recently picked up a m50dr2 to use with my 351 swap out of a 96 f150. just wondering into what sort of issues I'll run into. I've heard of the shifter being too far forward so how would I fix that? and will a np205 tcase mate up without issues? thanks

I have not picked up a 205 yet but have a 208 already. will the 208 fit between the frame rails? if so I will just keep that

I used '97 M5ODR2 which was behind a 5.0 and by using the plate style motor mounts my shifter is right where it needs to be. Easy to reach and far enough forward so the console is not in the way. NP205 had to have a 1/4" steel plate spacer made for $30 bucks, but otherwise it bolts right up.

The shifter sits about 1 inch from the dash in 1st and 5th gear. This photo was taken before the final positioning:

The bracing inside the tail housing of the transmission would not allow the NP205 to mate up without this spacer.

Cool, that earlier M5OD (not a '97 if it was behind a 302 and the shifter is clear ahead so it isn't out of a 97+ truck) fit better than I had it pictured.

How did the 4wd boot work out?

208 is one of the more popular t-cases for a V8 swap, I have one in my stash for if I ever run into a M5OD.

There is no real good way to switch the shifter to the front yet. 97+ has the shifter farther back. The rumor was spread a few years ago you could just switch the top covers... but the older ones have steel shift forks and 97+ have aluminum shift forks which are thicker. It is unknown to me if you can swap in the 97+ shift collars or even all the guts to make the later cover work with the earlier trans.

The getcha on the 97+ trans is most 4.2 trucks are 2wd and most 5 speed 4wd trucks have a 4.6 so a 4x4 4.2 one isn't the easiest thing to come by. I haven't seen one in a JY since a month after I bought my house (and had no extra $$) almost 4 years ago.

Also of note is automatic and manual trucks got different floor pans (at least first gens did) so if your truck was originally an automatic the hole in your floor won't be as big as Elutheros's so you might have more cutting to do.

yes my truck was automatic and I already have manual swapped it and the opening is not nearly as big as that one. and the tranny is out of a 96 so the shifter is farther forward even. will a bent shift handle be able to clear? and thanks for the idea of the spacer.

Your trans should be similar to the one above. A '97+ F-150 trans even in a automatic cab requires no trimming.

okay sweet. I'll just make a slightly bent shift handle. thanks for the replies

Sorry for the dementia--the transmission I used IS from a 1994 F-150 with the 5.0.

I slapped my 208 up to the m50d and it slid right in all the way to the tail housing with no gap. does that mean I still need the spacer or will it work without it?

as long as the bolts can pull it up tight, you are good to go. no spacer

What flywheel are you guys using for the m5od from a v6 f150? seems to be all i can find near me

I'm using the flywheel from a 5.0 F-150. Don't know if the V-6 flywheel would work.

I highly doubt the balance would be the same if it would even bolt on. (4.2 being a mostly if not all metric engine)
