351w exhaust question???

If you aren't building up past a stock 70s smog era 351 the would be fine i guess. If you are going to cam it, put decent heads on, an intake or anything to make some good power I would stay away from them.

For the record, it's not the same block...

No, it's not EXACTLY the same. The 351 is taller because it has a longer stroke. It's "the same" block in the same sense that the 2.9 and the 4.0 are the same block. They share a shape, a bell pattern, pistons from one fit reasonably well in the other, the heads are close, the valve covers are right.

If you really want to nit-pick about the details, the 5.0 converted to metric threads in the 90s, while the 351 kept standard threads for anything threaded into the block up until the end of production.

I'll play along. For those of you trying to find useful swap info, I apologize.

I wouldn't use 302 anything on a 351.

They are the same block, but that's about it.

So, which is it? They are the same, or you wouldn't use parts from one on another?

Head bolts are a different size. All bottom end torque specs are different. Oil pumps differ.
Different distributor. Different intake manifolds.

Heads interchange, motor mounts interchange, transmissions.

Most of us know this stuff, and need to nit pick all the small stuff. Like I'm doing...

No,

Every Explorer 5.0 block I've worked on still has the SAE threads into the block.

If it ain't the same, it ain't the same. Same family yes, same block no. Even then for members of the same supposed family they are quite a bit different.

Who cares what the accessory threads are on a late model 302, they are in the same place and you can in fact put an Explorer drive on a 289 by using different bolts if they are different. I used a metric socket set to remove two Explorer FEAD's in the JY but that doesn't mean much... its all I had. You have my curiosity peaked enough to check the threads though. The best thread on swapping Explorer FEAD's I have found is actually on an early Bronco forum.

I would use stock manifolds before using those pinched up explorer headers. I'm using the 302 swap headers (ebay has them)on my 351 in my 90 ranger, well actually only using the driver side header from the swap kit and othe rside is a flipped shorty . Put up a pic and you can see it clears the factory steering.

they DO fit to clear the steering shaft. I used them on my swap for a couple weeks. I suggest having some made tho. if you want all the power that motor will produce to be put to the ground you wont get it with those pieces of crap. at full throttle the engine will choke up because they dont let enough exhaust flow as needed.

check out my thread 2003 3.0-5.8 build. mac showed me the same pics of those "choke" tube headers

here what i endup doing for my swap works fairly good for first time building a header and only put about $30 in to it with some old 302 headers and for the passenger side i use the headers jegs sells with their 302 swap kit
