351 modified

It (460) can fit - http://www.bigblockranger.com but it's going to take some fabrication. 302 swap has been covered a million times and almost any question you have can be answered. You're going to lack a lot of information going with a big motor like that (you'll be kind of on your own in some situations). Almost anything can fit, how good are you at dealing with big issues and how much money do you have?

a 460 has been swapped into a ranger before, but keep in mind that MAJOR modifications are in order to make it fit. i would just go with a 351W, i saw in some mag that a guy built a 351W (if i'm remembering right) naturally aspirated and had around 800HP.

I don't think I see anything conflicting in those two statements. Both are saying stay away from the 351M. See from your profile that you're 18, got ten grand plus to throw at this project? Unless you plan on racing at the strip, one of the small blocks is your best bet. Big motor, big Hp don't count except for bragging rights only to lose at the strip to a 5.0 with a good set-up and a blower or "gas".

Just what's out there that fits in a lot better than either the 351M or 460.

im not saying im about to dump 10000$ into this but i was just trying to see my options i have never swaped engines but i have pulled them. just was looking for a good direction to get started so apparently a 302 is easy and doable for a first time swapper? also what do you guys preffer EFI or carb?

I am going carb because that is what my truck is set up for from the factory and what it has now. It would be a lot easier for you to go EFI since you are already set up for it, with your truck that is what I would do.

i prefer propane! no fuel pumps to fool around with, no liquid fuel to slosh in a carb (will run perfectly on inclines, saddles, upside down!). octane rating of over 100 ( you can run higher compression with higher timing=more power)! awesome throttle response! lower on the hydrocarbon scale (cleaner motor internals, less pollution), the regulator helps keep engine coolant cooler. :icon_hornsup:

downside... availability! BUT, with 2 bottles that is easier to handle, provided this isnt a DD.

Come on, name a few MAJOR modifications. I want to know what they are.

:icon_surprised: i have seen this done before looks sweet but i dont think i will go this route because propane is alot per gallon how is the gas mileage:icon_confused:

hey bigblockranger i just read your whole write up that is one bad ass truck you got there i didnt really see any crazy things you did except make your own headers which isnt really a problem what trans did you go with? was the 460 worth it or is it basicly the same as a 351?:icon_thumby:

Trans = C6

Same as a 351? lol Add about 200 cubic inches to that 351 and you tell me.

And yes, so far it has been worth it for sure. :)

the fuel consumption is close to regular gasoline... as for price, when i bought my kit (before the gas crisis last year), propane was $1.09, gasoline was $1.39! it is a little more expensive than gas now, but that can change again tomorrow. :D

:thefinger: i get the point lol, is there a reason you choose the c6auto instead of a manual? i know the c6 isnt a manual but im not really on the up and up on transmissions and which is the best for every application.:dunno:

wow i never realized that propane was a good alternative fuel to run a offroad rig on what do you have a propane tank hooked to a regulator then to the carb?:icon_confused: i have seen it setup on extreme 4x4 but maybe if you explained what you got :)

okay, the tank stores liquid, hi pressure propane, it flows from the tank to either a VFF30 lockoff or similar device (12v solinoid), which stops and starts the flow of liquid upon demand, from there when there is a demand the liquid travels to the regulator which drops the pressure and converts the liquid to a gas (this chemical change supercools the regulator, requiring engine coolant flowing thru it to keep it from freezing solid), from the regulator propane gas/vapor flows to the "mixer" or propane carb. into the motor as it has demand (throttle plate). the connections can be made with hoses or pipe whichever works best for your application. :icon_thumby:

at the moment i am working on trying to modify a NOS cheater kit to use propane for the fuel, for use on my bronco! :headbang:
