Okay guys i am about to start on my stroker motor pretty soon, and i figured i would get some advice on the two stroker motors i am deciding between. The first motor is the 347 DSS stroker motor. I have heard that they don't really hold up all that good in the higher rpm stage because of the stroker kits they offer, but then again i have heard they do great. The 331 stroker is my second because i heard they hold up way better because of the choices of stroker kits you can get for them. My opinion i think both are very good motors and would have both if i could but i don't want to spend 10,000 dollars on two motors, i have no use for two. Then my next question is what is better to run on one EFI, or carb??? Give me some advice guys, just being curious. Thanks

It depends on the quality of rod/piston. I had a 347 88 LX hatch with 349rwhp @5800 ,shifted at 5500 the car ran 12.90-13.1 @sea level .it was done on the cheap and was fun but short shifted alot-sold to a guy and told him to stay below 6000 ,within a week car towed back with new owner crying foul-he forgot the TATTLE TAIL on the huge MONSTER TACH -7200 IS WHERE IT WAS WHEN UNLOADED-FAIL! From what i can gather the side loading on the 347 is alot -inches are everything but caveat emptor !

For raw power potential 347, for longer engine life a 331 is the way to go if a 306 won't cut it for you. Also check out CHP's 347's.. they put the rings in a better spot than DSS does.

depends on your goals brother ........ but after having a 32v DOHC 4.6L intec I don't think I can go back to a performance pushrod engine....

but if there was a gun to my head and I had to pick one..... I would not laugh at a 347..... or a 331. I guess I am no help.

The question is why would you give up FREE cubic inches/ horse power??

I dont know that i would personally stroke a 302 with a stock block. I have seen to many blocks split, but they were all in our Race car turning higher RPMs and were in the 450HP Range. I would go with a 351w if it were me.

351 based 393 FTW, 347/408's have the same ring issues... 331/393's seem to be more reliable!

You couldnt be more wrong here. The 347's suffer from alot of side load on the pistons and then the oil ring into the wrist pin. This is not even close to a problem on the 408 or even the 427 351w strokers. The 351w has a lot longer rod and a tall block deck height there for having less side load on the pistons. I have a 408 that makes 840+HP at the crank and its been together for over two years with not one single issue. Its in a drag car that revs to 7500rpm on every pass.

Hmm, I'll retract my statement, but had been given the info via a local builder... perhaps he was using cheap parts? I myself was looking at a 408 stroker back when I was still gonna run a ford driveline.

IIRC Honda's have the same or Worse rod angle of a 347, yet you dont hear much about that... (granted that most of us probably dont run in those circles..) but still.......

Ok, I went through this same ordeal. Skip a 302 based engine unless you want to spend money on a aftermarket block period, that is bottom line, If it is a stock block and don't matter who machined it like dss, it is still a stock block and it WILL split sooner or later when over 450rwhp. Don't waste your money on a 302 build, step up to a 351 based engine. I built a 331 and wanted more power and couldn't push it because of the 302's weakness. It did run 11's though, but you will always want more power thats a fact. I have a stock 95 351 with a 70mm turbo now and it would kill my 331. You can find my truck on youtube just search ranger 331. Good luck

I built my 331 seven years ago. It's still going strong, in it's second vehicle. Do I abuse it ? No. Do I run it? Every chance I get. It's been to 6500 hundreds of times. It's been to 7 grand a dozen times. It's built around a stock 88 roller block. It's not going to give up the ghost anytime soon. My son's got a 347, it's been going for about three years now. He runs it far harder than I do my 331, so far it's held up fine. If not mistaken, his is a CHP build. Mine was a kit, machine work was done locally, assembled my myself.

Thats the key right there. The 302 will split in half with enough power and time. You could build a 5.0l that makes a ton more HP, but never really use it and it wont break. But whats the point in a powerful motor that can never be used?!?

If you're looking for 400hp or less, the 302 is fine. But do you really need to stroke it for 400HP?

I'm looking at doing this same thing as I have a stock 95 f150 5.0 engine from my truck. Also the efi or carb thing wasn't answered

Just go with a 351W.
