I'm currently gathering parts for the lift on my '86 and have a decision to make about my front axle. I want to run 33's and the lift I want will work with a D35 when I go that route in the future.

The lift: http://www.tuffcountry.com/suspension-kit/ford-ranger-1983-97-explorer-1991-94-lift-kits.html

My question is how do D28's hold up to this size of tires? I'm pretty sure I have 3.45 gears.. (rear axle code is 45 A75 6F16)

I don't wheel it hard and I plan on swapping in an 8.8 and a D35 once I find an Ex to part out.

Ummm..not to well from what I've heard. Just be easy on the throttle. :) The D-35 is a good idea.

The D28 will not hold up well to 33s if you plan on doing any heavy offroading. Forget about locking the diff, or romping through anything at WOT.

I'm gonna keep it on light trails until I get the 35 and 8.8. I'm definitely not gonna lock the front. Not worth it. I'll probably weld the rear.

own 2 b2s, the one that has a build thread and the other one. The other one i call the Bearswamp B2. Bearswamp is a local mod bog that is held one sunday a month. I use this B2 solely for these runs. Last year and the previous year i ran the b2 and i think out of 7 full day trips out there i maybe wnet through 4 front shafts........

The B2 has a D28 Front WELDED and a 7.5 rear WELDED 2.9L and Mitsu 5 spd.. Last year i ran 32x11.50 MTs and the previous year i ran 33x12.50 MTs. When i run this truck its Full Throttle 4-lo 1st gear and float the valves.....(i have gone through 4-5 shafts in the front, none in the rear, but i am on my 3rd 2.9L and 3rd clutch disc).

I also daily drove and weekend wheeled the b2 on 33's for a year and only ate one LF shaft while DD'ing it. For those that know me, know i am not easy on the skinny pedal

Don't listen to CheapThrill, he's just a pavement pounder and web wheeler. :icon_rofl:

But seriously, I have never actually owned a rig with a D28. I have only heard from others that they are weak, and held a set of D28 shafts compared to a D35. It looks like CheapThrill has some pretty good experience with the D28. If he was able to run 33s locked and drive the way he does, you should be fine running 33s open.

I have a tendency to (when replacing u-joints) set the e-brake and do some nice front axle only burnouts.

They are a blast. Of course I have stock tires and an open diff.

i ran 33's on my d28 for a while before dropping down to 31s and mine was fine and i pushed that truck hard. you should be ok as a dd

Good deal. I really appreciate the advice. I just don't want to break my shit the 3rd time out ya know :)

Those mud holes above are sick. I wish we had stuff like that in SD!

i'm running 32/11.50's on my D28 and havent had any problems so far, but i have buddy's who break D28's with a 235/75R15 sreet tire. it all depends on how hard you drive it.

Be aware of where your front tires are pointed with the D28. If you are going to spin those tires, try to keep the tires pointed straight ahead. It'll make those little u-joints last longer.

in running 33'' swomps and havent broke any thing, done some hard shit to. i am swapin in a d35 and 8.8 so i know i wont brake. you will be fine.

Mud is pretty forgiving on axles compared to wheeling on hard dirt or rocks.

I would have to agree though, it should be fine with the 33s and open diff as long as you know when not to use too much throttle.

yep that hits the nail on the head......i spend 85% of my full throttle runs going as striaght as i can
