ok i have a 302 out of a 1988 crown vic. and I am new to the 4wd community and have read the swap info on trs and there is still some questions i have. i dont know what kind of tranny to put in it. i have found everything else i need to do the swap or know what to get with the exception of the transmission. what year and what model vehicles could i get one from? i am wanting to keep the 5spd style for personal preff. i found a
d44 and a ford 9" to go in as well. am i gonna have to shorten the drive shaft or should it all work?

Any transmission that bolts to a 302 will work (anything behind a 300, 302, 351). The 4.6 will work too but Im told that you have to drill out the holes on the bell housing a little bit.

I am going to be running an np435 with np208 and found out lastnight what clutch/flywheel setup I am going to be running, all 87 stuff and starter, all behind my 91 Grand Marqie that I am converting to HO.

If you want to have a 4x4 5 speed manual transmission, the only option I know of is a M5od-r2 out of a f150 probably 88-95 years though I'm not sure on the years.
there is also the jeep t5 though I'm not to sure how that would work out.

I would go with an M5OD R2. It is close in size to the R1 that was put in Rangers (but still bigger). It lines up nicely though and it is not a hard transmission to work on. Pretty sturdy too.

There are a few options for you. The most common truck 5-speed will be the M5OD-R2 in the F-150s, 88 and newer (post-97 use the V6). It will bolt up to your 302 and work with the ranger clutch hydraulics. The only other truck 5-speed is the ZF in the HD trucks 88 and up but you have to be sure to find one that was mated to a small block. That one isn't for everyone, it's huge and you will be cutting your floor and firewall to get it in there, not to mention you will pay top dollar for it. The R2 and ZF are one piece units meaning the bellhousing is cast into the transmission. If you can deal without overdrive they will all be pre-88 transmissions and your options are the Np435, t-18 and t-19. Those transmissions the bellhousings separate so you can swap on what you need. I'll at least mention the t-5 from the mustang. It will fit but you aren't going to find the adapter kit to use 4x4 anymore, if you do find one you will pay for it. Or use a divorced t-case. And don't use a transmission from a modular ford engine they aren't the same pattern. Even if they are close, opening the holes up creates alignment issues and that equals broken stuff. All of those transmissions (minus the T5) use fullsize t-cases. The only 2 that are pretty easy to fit between the frame rails without cutting them are the NP205 or the NP208. As far as your axle swaps its just about a 100% chance you will need new/modified driveshafts. Hope that gets you in the right direction.
