so i'm trying to figure out what my 302 originally came out of. yes, it was pulled out of an early 70's EB, but that doesn't mean anything.

the only numbers i have found so far:

F20S - on the front of the motor, driver's side
06190 - front of motor, passenger side
23 - under the intake, in the valley.

are there more numbers anywhere else? the motor is sitting on a tire right now, so its hard to see under the exhaust manifolds. gonna have to lift it up to see under there.

Look here for the numbers to ID your block

As far as what it originally came in it would be hard to tell as the casting numbers weren't set to individual vehicles.

The ONLY way to tell what any Ford engine was originally installed in, is if the thin aluminum Id tag is still attached to the carb or intake. These were about 3/4" square with a peaked top and a hole in the peak that the attaching screw/bolt went thru.

And even then carbs get mixed around pretty often and seperated from their original engine.

cleaned it off some more, and it looks like:

D8VE-6015-A3A-Z
7F7
and "78" below that.

can't find the first number code (D8VE) on any of the websites. really, i just want to know what year the motor is

D8 is fords code for 1978. So I would figure it is from somewhere around that time frame. On parts like blocks, they often used casting numbers for several years.

It was cast on June 7, 1977. (7F7) And congrats, you've got a winner. D8VE is the heavyweight 302, like the Mex block, but with std main caps. Bore it 60 over, stroke it with a 347 crank and you'll have a small block 352

thanks for the info! looks like i got an even better deal than i originally thought. ($650 for this motor, hooked to an np435, and an AA adapter hooked to a dana 20 transfer case)
