howdy all.

crashed the ranger earlier this week. winter sucks.

so, time for a new girl. leaning pretty heavily towards an 04 sport trac. i like the four doors, the polymer bed, and the fact that mechanically they are almost identical to rangers.

once i find one i like, first order of business this spring will be new exhaust.

my ranger had the dynomax ultra-flo kit. i was pretty happy with it.

I'd like to get a 3" tailpipe bent up for the new motor. i'll run a 2.25" intermediate pipe and a 2.5" muffler.

will i have any trouble with this? again, 3" only after the muffler.

Stick to 2.5", 3" is a bit much and you wont have enough back pressure...

thanks for the reply.
doesn't it not really matter what size pipe is after the muffler? seems like plenty of guys run a short "dump" pipe after, might as well be no tailpipe at all?

At that point, I would think, back pressure should not be an issue. 3" tubing may be a little hard to find (and expensive to bend) but, hey, it's your truck. Personally, I like the exhaust to dump in front of the passenger side rear wheel but, IIRC, the Sport Tracs dump on the driver's side.

cool. i'm going to talk to a local exhaust shop once I have the scratch for a new system, but i wanted to start here.
as far as i know, the 1st gen sport tracs dump on the pass. side like a ranger, and the 2nd gens dump on the drivers side.

Didn't realize there were two Sport Trac generations. The one I see in the parking garage, at work, must be Gen. 2. IIRC, the muffler may too far aft to get the dump in front of the rear passenger side wheel. But, anything can be solved with the appropriate application of brains and money. :D

Sport Tracs are great. On my second one after my kids outgrew the Ranger.
A Gen 1 Trac (01-05) is like a Gen 2 Explorer. A Gen 2 Trac (07-10) is like a Gen 3 Explorer with the IRS.
I put a Gibson cat-back on mine back when it was practically new. Sounds good, slam dunk to install. 2.5" the whole way with a stainless 3" tip.
On Tracs the frame hangs kinda low to dump the exhaust in front of the rear wheel.
