I've been away from here for a while because of my work schedule. Some of you may remember my $100 85 ranger.
A few months back it tried to commit suicide. First the distributor grenaded. All of the guts came apart and just destroyed everything inside of the cap. So I bought a new distributor. I was working on picking the correct timing mark when the seal on the water pump gave up. I replaced it, and both of my starter bolts (a problem area on this truck) pulled out of the threads, both bolt holes stripped out.
Flash forward to today. I took a grinder and removed most of the boss on the bell housing for the lower starter bolt turning the blind hole into a thru hole. I ended the day trying to fit a drill in to get the top hole. I'm going bolt and nut on both. It turns out that the reason my starter bolts kept loosening up was because there was antiseize in both holes.
With one bolt and nut on, and some fancy stuff we won't discuss, I started from scratch with the timing. I bumped the starter to get the timing marks lined up, pulled the valve cover to verify that both valves were closed on the #1 cylinder, then hooked up a timing light and rotated the distributor until I got a flash at 10 degrees btdc. Theoretically the truck should start right up.
So here's the trick, how in the ****!####$$$ do you get a drill in the top starter bolt hole on a 2.8 5 speed ranger without pulling the tranny. I am open to suggestions, and already have a drill bit cut down as short as possible to save space.
