how sluggish should i expect my ranger to run with the 3.73 ratio after i toss some 35's on it? gonna be a bit before i can get the new gears so i just want to know what i should expect.
thanks

It depends what motor you have. My 3L has 3.73s and a 33. It is a dog, I can cruise 75-80 down the highway but it is at like 3500 in 4th gear, 5th gear is now useless. It is also very hard to get it goin from a stop, especially on any kind of an incline.

Yeah, 3.73s would be pretty lame with 35s. I even hated my 3.45s with 31s.

3.73s with 31s and a 2.9 were ok around town, but sucked on the highway. I wouldn't even think of trying 35s and 3.73 with anything but a V8.

Let me tell you from experience, 3.73 gears and 35" tires on even a 4.0 sucks monkey butt. I had to run that setup for 2 weeks on my old '97 Ranger. It hardly ever shifted into overdrive. Don't stop on a hill and try to back up, it isn't happening even in 4wd.

My tranmission temps were upwards of 240* when I had the 3.73's and 35's.

I don't suggest it for no reason.

I did this on my wheelin rig for about a year. First let me say my rig was for the trail only so it never saw street driving.

I had 33’s then went to 35’s, But I have a doubler. With my 2.9, M50D trans, doubler and 3.73 gears I had to use double low a lot. Without a doubler I would never want to wheel with any RBV drive train combo with 35’s and 3.73’s. For the type of wheelin I do slipping the clutch or going way to fast would be in order. Now this might not be the case for you, but if you don’t wheel hard and DD it more, well that’s going to suck as well.

Now I have 4.88 gears and it makes a world of difference. My truck still does not see the street other than on a trailer or tow-bar, but it can haul down the two tracks unlike it ever could with 3.73’s.

If you want bigger tires save and get the gears first. But if you must as many do, expect shitty power, slipping the clutch if you have a manual or a HOT auto.

ya i was goin to go from 31 to 33 and everyone on here told me that with my stock 3.73 an a 3L it would be crappy for everything, but i just got one quick question if i went from 3.73 to like 4.10 or 4.55 is my truck still goin to beable to go highway speeds? and with the gear change and i just goin to have like more torque in my truck or what

It's going to be rather sluggish. I have 3.27 gears on stockers ... which is a wee bit shorter that 3.73s and 35s. If you had 29s, it would be 3.08 or something.

For offroad it's going to suck.

i have 3.73's and 33's on my 2.9 b2.. and it is slow.. fifth is worthless. and i blew the tranny yesterday after six hours of driving on the freeways. so thats prob not a cool combo on 35's.

what about 32s with 4:10 3l i don't want to get new rims so 33s are out

why are 33's out because of your rims. You can get a 33x10.5 which is fine on the stock 15x7 or even a 12.5 cold be pulled off. Unless you meant gears that doesnt make sense

33x10.5's!!!!!! they arent bad at all!!! i have this combo! 3.73 5spd, 3.0L!
most people that say its impossible, have never had them!!:secret:

what about 32s with 4:10 3l i don't want to get new rims so 33s are out

most 32's are 11.5 wide, like the other guy and i have said, 33x10.5r15's!!!
i have pretty much stock off set wheels, 7.5 inches wide. i dont even notice the difference anymore! i bought a set of 4.10's but have yet to put them in, but the 3.73's are fine for daily use.:bye:
