All,

I am looking at a 99 Rabger with a failed 3.0L, piston #2 dead according to ad. Since I have only had Rangers with the 2.3L Lima engine I do not know what issues the 3.0L engine may have. This is the second Ranger with a failed 3.0L I have seen advertised. Is this a fluke or is there something that I should be aware of and avoid? This one has ~99k miles.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Also I will be looking into the cost of a replacement 3.0L since I don't have time now to rebuilf this engine should I purchase it.

THANKS!

Problems:

The most common problem reported with the 3.0L is the camshaft position sensor. Learn more about it HERE.

Head gasket failures are also common when the cooling system is neglected.

An issue to watch out for is air in the coolant system when you refill it. One of the hoses has a point that is actually higher than the radiator and can allow an air pocket if not filled properly.

I loved the 3.0 in my ranger, it was relatively trouble free up to 170,000 miles when i sold it for a bronco 2. Its not strapped with power, and didn't get amazing gas mileage, but it was all I needed in the truck for what I used it for. If your planning on going with bigger tires your probably going to want to regear, mine was geared 3.73 and was kind of a dog with the 31/10.50 General grabber AT/2's. Many of the junkyards around here have plenty of 3.0's, since its different from the 2.9 and 4.0 bell housing.

Thanks William!

This was good information but it does not explain a failed #2 piston - if this is infact the failure. Another site hinted that some valve keepers may fail which would explain a failed piston. Once I get in touch with the seller I will ask questions that are directly related to the cam postiion sensor (shaft) to determine if it had any part in the failed engine. Since it is a 1999 it has most of the improvements minus the improved intake assy.

Thanks for the links and helpful guidance.
