I was wondering why my Ford Ranger is getting less miles to the gallon than my 5.0 coupe did? I was getting 20-25 in my 5.0, and i'm getting 17-22 in my Ranger. They both have standard trannys, but the 5.0 had alot more go than my Ranger does. The gas mileage I indicated for both cars are thru town. The 5.0 was stock except for the exhaust. What can I do to get better gas mileage out of my little 3.0L Ranger?:icon_confused:

if you had a 2.9 you'd get good milage and more power.

17-22 doesn't sound bad at all for a V6 truck. Remember that you're a brick in the wind on the highway, compared to the Mustang.

My '94 Ranger 3.0 averages 19 almost 20 all purpose miles. I've got the 4 spd manual with OD, and I'm told I drive like a lil ol' lady. I burn regular gas that I buy at Costco, and I use no additives.

I just filled up today and my average was 18mpg. Thats with an auto tranny and 40 miles of highway driving a day. I thought that was pretty damn good.

if you thought the 3.0 is sluggish just wait till you drive on of these, after you get past the peak which is very low RPMs you just flat line and get no accel or power and terrible gas mileage, or so my uncle says. who got rid of his and got a 3.0 and he said the difference is like going from a OHV 4.0 to a SOHC 4.0

idk what you would want to do to try and get better mpg. My 93 3.0 5 spd 4wd splash, with 4.56 gears and 33s,I can get 20mpg, and i'm not joking,i can get 20mpg and i pretty much have it in 5th gear cruising at 55mph. I drive 60 miles a day, 30 up 30 back going to work.

i like my 2.9

I'm guessing the reason for the better MPG in the mustang has to do with aerodynamics - the car has much less wind drag than the ranger does.

also the mustang was probly a bit lighter of a car and with the added power of the 5.0 less work was used to move the car. i know a guy had a bronco with a 5.0 and one with a 5.8 and the 5.8 would get better milage because it used less effort to move the truck

There are so many things that affect your mileage on the truck compared to the Mustang, aerodynamics is the big one. Changing from an aggresive tire tread to another can gain you 1-2 mpg. Get a bed cover. Over all, don't think your mileage is all that bad.

Hi this gas thing intrigues me. since I have driven the ranger 6cy 3.o 4x2 I felt like geez this things sucks on gas. i fill up and 2-3 days later filling up again. average 100 miles ed. im getting about 225-275 miles per tank. i would like to get what some of you are doing. my fillups cost me about $27-30 per tank . i know i have not dont anything to the truck since i have gotten it and so im doing a complete tune-up flushing all fluids, brakes, new radiator, waterpump, . QUESTION: Do you guys think that once the distributer, plugs, wires, air filters and whatever else a full tune-up entails would help with my gas miledge? thks

and if you guys can what does a full complete tune-up entails? what parts to by? and what brand for the most peak performance?

Your mileage sounds good to me, I have a 98 3.0 4x4 with 4.56's and 33's and I average about 15-16 mixed driving. It's hard to stay off the skinny pedal in this thing though.

my '92 long bed got 21-22 in normal day to day driving, and got about 25 on the highway. I never got below 20 with it.
