Lee:
If you want 3.08 gears, look at Mustangs - 3.08 is probably most common, 2.73 and 3.27 being the others.
Just swap ring and pinon from the Mustang into your Ranger (or get a 2nd rbv axle and swap axles.)
For better mileage, there are some simple things too:
Remove passenger side mirror/get "sports" mirror for drivers side; tape seams on hood (removing wipers helps too, but that is not legal, so we will ignore that one
); tape about 1/2 grill shut (needs to be experimented with to avoid over heating) - on my university Super mileage Vehicle team, we got carried away and fabricated up a "Superbird" nose/build a box cover that went from top of cab to couple feet behind box, i.e. used whole sheet of plywood; get narrow tires e.g. 165/80R15s, flush hub caps, get rid of extra weigh (replace spare with space saver or even leave it behind), drop it 3" (cut coil in front/axle flip in back is least expensive), drive like there is an egg on both gas pedal, clean air filter, synthetic oil.
With the above, we knocked back 35 mpg on a 200 mile test.
