hey guy's

i have a '99 ranger (extended cab 4w/d) it has the powerless 3.0 engine in it, i am thinking of swapping it with a 4.0. how much is involved as far as will the trans bolt right up to the 4.0? (it is an automatic) i have been told that the complete engine wiring harness will have to be used. are there any other problems that i might run into? is it worth doing the swap? any and all advise will be appreciated. thank you:3gears:

Searching the tech library and forums will reveal a wealth of information. Some of that includes...

3.0L and 4.0L engines have a different bellhousing bolt pattern. You'll need a 4.0L specific trans.

The ECU from that 4.0L with the auto or manual trans will be needed.

All the parts were built from ford. Motor mounts, 4.0L radiator, ect...

thanks go-fast, i'll check it out. i just want to make sure the swap is worth it

If you swap in a 4.0L pushrod V6 you'll feel a lot of torque that just isn't there with the 3.0L V6. Acceleration will improve all around and fuel consumption would be 16-18 real world mpg.

Swapping in a 4.0L SOHC engine will give you gobs of torque over the 3.0L also, but it'll pull better above 2,500rpm. The OHV engine usually falls on its face around 4,00-4,500rpm while the SOHC version will pull to 5,800rpm. But, if you're interested in the 4.0L SOHC engine, you'll want to find a 2004 or newer drivetrain as the earlier engines had timing chain issues.

Daily driving, the engines feel pretty much the same as they are within 5lb-ft of torque from idle to 2250rpm. After that, the torque curve of the SOHC rises above and is extended longer. That means better passing power and more mud throwing! Beyond that, I've only got experience swapping a 351 into a foxbody mustang and a 302 into a ranger. Wait, I took a Yamaha Warrior and stuffed a Kawi Ninja ZX7 (750cc) engine in it. Oh, and a 383ci SBC into a boat originally with a 4.3L.
