I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4. The 3.0L flex fuel recently blew up. I have tried to find a "like for like" junkyard replacement but have had no luck. I have found a 4.0L from a rolled 94 Explorer and the Ford mechanic at my local dealership says it will bolt right up to the existing tranny and all I will have to change is the computer. I thought I remembered reading on this site that the 4.0 will not bolt up to the 3.0 tranny. Will this motor work (the 4.0L)? If so, how much modifications are required?:dunno:

You are correct the trans bolt patterns are different, sorry but you would need a new trans.

You are going to have problems with the year difference if you have any emission testing in your area. The wiring and computer probably won't like your 2000 either. The engine and transmission will bolt up with a few changes. The 4.0 motor mounts are the same but are mounted to the frame in a different location. I don't know what the 2000 computers look like or how they are mounted so that may be a location issue. None of your wiring connectors are going to match. Either plan on repinning all your 3.0 connectors or doing a lot of splicing. It will be a pain. It would be far easier to find a 2000 4.0 with all the correct sensors, computer, transmission and under-hood wiring. It would save you some time, hair, brain cells and headaches. Oh, don't forget the 4.0 y-pipe and 02 sensors.
