You're pretty much stuck with the A4LD. Unless you want to change over to a 5 speed (M5OD-R1). Since you live close to me and you probably know the area there is a guy in Creve Couer who does transmission very cheap. If you pull the transmission he will rebuild it for you with no extra cost and his labor other than to rebuild it. Look for Jim's Transmissions on main drag in Creve Couer. He is across from the big churh in the midle of the curve right before you start to go down the hill into East Peoria. He just rebuilt the trans for my wifes Explorer and charged me $700.

Major mechanical mods, no. Major electrcial/wiring mods, yes. The 4r44e is completely electronically-controlled and would basically be a wiring nightmare trying to get it work. You would need a new computer, wiring for the trans, and possibly new engine wiring harness. Most of the computers are OBD-2 except for 1995 models, so you would have the additonal nightmare of converting from OBD-1.
