I bought a 98 Ranger with a 3.0 with 161k on it. It takes forever to start. Itll sputter and pop and once it starts it doesn't want to rev up. If you can keep it going enough to get it in drive it will clear up and be fine after driving a couple blocks. This mostly only happens on a cold start. I have P171 and P174. I replaced to MAF, fuel filter, and am about to do the plugs and wires. I checked for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner and propane and didn't find any. Also I didn't find any exhaust leaks. Any thoughts? I don't want to go and start buying parts I don't need. Thanks

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but those codes are for the O2 sensors. I think I remember reading that faulty O2 sensors can make the engine run bad.?
In the tech library, computer section, there is information about it. What stinks is there are more than one and they cost a pretty penny!

You should do the engine self tests -- running and not runnnig. The self test cylinder tests might reveal even more. Those tests put the engine and all the emissions components and subsystems through their paces and help pinpoint problems very accurately. I'm pretty sure on a 99 you have an OBD II computer. You can find OBD II readers at any auto store and can probably rent one. If you're a computer type, you can get a usb cable and some free software on eBay or other sources.

Just throwing parts at it is going to cost you a lot more and you might not even solve the problem. On the other hand, if you just got it, doing a tuneup is probably a good idea. And, IMHO, go with real OEM parts on the emissions components.

Fix your codes, and then, if the problem persists, consider replacing the fuel filter.

Tried fixing the codes. It does has new 02s. Didnt mention that first round
