3.0 PCV Routing Question

Hey all,

I've been trying to go through everything emissions related to make sure my 1994 3.0 Ranger will pass CA smog. I pulled the PCV valve to check for vacuum and it seemed quite strong so fairly certain there are no issues with clogging.

I did notice something weird when tracing the smaller line from the top of the PCV valve, though. If you look at the pics below, you can see that the smaller top hose leads to a black cylinder with an electrical connector and another hose that isn't attached to anything. The whole assembly was just hanging freely in the right side of the engine bay near the AC compressor.

Any idea what this is or how it should be routed? Might this cause some issues related to emissions? Thanks for any help!

Looks like part of the EVAP system, the part pictured would be the EVAP solenoid.
The EVAP system pulls air from the fuel tank to prevent gas vapors from polluting the air.
Not sure on the '94 3.0l but the solenoid should be connected to a charcoal canister which is connected to a line going to the fuel tank.

yes, that being unhooked should cause a fail in Calif. smog test, they connect their own fuel cap and test the tank for leaks, that would be one.
They also test the gas caps in Calif. :)

look in the engine compartment for a vacuum line diagram

This is the '95 3.0l vacuum diagram, the '94 didn't show it???

Also have a look here, find the 3.0l diagram, second one down:

The only thing that failed when I got it tested the first time was the EVAP. Guess we found the culprit!! :yahoo:

Got a question here. Do the 97 3.0's have this similar set up? Only asking because everytime i have replaced the PCV on my 97 it has had the elbow with the single outlet not the double. More or less just my curiosity because only 3.0's i have ever worked on have been 97 and newer and one was in my ranger and the other in my parents 97 sable station wagon.

It looks like the 3.0 EVAP vacuum source changed in '95, diagram(above) shows PCV and EVAP running from separate vacuum lines.

So yes you have an EVAP system, it just runs directly from the intake not the PCV valve
