Just bought 95 Ranger XLT 2WD Automatic which is shot along with the motor, Th reason we bought this truck was for body parts but after looking it over it came from the sothern states and is in relly good shape, so here is what we need to know would like to put 4.0 in along with automatic tranny again, what are we up agaist ? And what years 4.0 would we need to find ? and would we have to do the wireing harness ? and rearend ratios as well and how about fuel lines and motor mounts ? looks like there have been lots of 2.9 and others done but we want 4.0 for sure. Thanks in advance for any and all the help we will need to bring this 95 back to live again.

So your going to want to probably find a donor vehicle that has been wrecked. shoot for something from 95 to 2000 but remember that SOHC engines started coming out in 98 and if you got one of those you would have some extra complications. Buy an EVTM manual like this one and start checking the wiring status between the 3.0 and 4.0.

My guess is you will need to get the engine harness from the donor with the 4.0. Obviously the comp would come also.
Gear ratios wont matter very much because your ranger with a 3.0 probably has 3.73 and the 4.0 probably comes with 3.53 which means you would just have a little more kick of the racing blocks.
You can also mix and match years with parts you find from different vehicles because there are endless possibilities of how you could do this swap.
Read every 3.0 to 4.0 swap here by doing a quick search in the engine conversions section.
This information will get you a start.
I cant really go into detail on your swap because I have never done a 3.0 to 4.0 swap.
Hopefully someone that has done one can answer some more questions for you.

Hey thanks for the reply & help, did order the manual which will help me either way as we have plenty of rangers around,
Got one other option which would maybe be cheaper for me, I have 91 ranger XLT with good 2.9 with automatic other than its a 4X4 but we can change the tail shaft in the tranny should be all that needs ? how about the main wires and the computer @ rear end gears ? What do you guys think about this ? thanks again for any ideas.

Well if you have plenty of rangers around you should be able to find a rear end for the tranny to convert it to a 2wd... but that's the least of your worries. If your going to put a 91 2.9 in a 95 truck you would have to have an all new wiring harness and computer...and also you would have some splicing to do to make your instrument cluster work and all the other electrical systems. (probably wouldn't be worth the work to get the 2.9 in there). Rear end gears wouldn't matter at all as they probably have the same ratios. If it were me, I would probably just re-build the 3.0 (depending on whats wrong with it) and find another tranny or start collecting parts for the 4.0 swap.
Those are just my thoughts though...
It's all up to what you want to do and how much work you want to put in learning about all the differences between the engines.

Well the 95 with the bad tranny & motor is a 2wd, I think you have talked me out of doing the 2.9 swap, will keep looking for 4.0 donor i guess.
