3.0 needs head

Sheeet... if I had to replace BOTH heads, I'd be loathe to go with another set from FoMoCo... OTOH, are there ANY aftermarket (made from scratch) heads for the Vulcan? I'd be willing to experiment with aluminum at that point... shave some weight AND lower your C.G.

70k is not much mileage for cast iron heads... was there an identifiable coolant or oil-flow failure? Perhaps quality is NOT job 1... lol.

Granted, we're still lacking HARD stats on the issue... of course shops that do such "hard parts" engine work see a "lot" of it... no one goes there for an oil change.

I'm off to the 4-banger forums, to see what my options are, if any, for a lightweight, high MPG turbo I-4... JUST IN CASE. ;')

thank you all for the help. i bought a new head from ford for about $350. when i took the old head off it turned out to be a burned valve due to spark plug detination when my fuel pump went out. so i returned the new head and had my local machine shop rebuild the old one for $75 it runs great now. im all about saving money and my truck is a cheap old gal. once again thanks for all the help i coulnt have done it with out you guys.

I agree, any piker can keep their truck on the road with a fed.gov size budget... the real craftiness is minimizing total operating costs, or TOC. GOOD SHOW!

3.0 heads 95 ranger

i have a 95 3.0 that ate a valve, i found a set of flex fuel heads from a 98. i'm gonna try it and see what happens. should be fine.i will repost after repair.

looking forward to hearing how that goes.

i really cant imagine why the PCM wouldnt be able to compensate for the small change in cumbustion chamber size...

the 98 bseries heads worked just fine, except they sat around for a while and i now have a manifold exhaust leak due to the rusted manifold mating surface on the head, i tried to clean it, but with no stock gasket they leak. i think i'm gonna try some of that high temp rtv, but for now it runs fine. btw 8 of the 12 manifold bolts sheared off during removal. good thing they don't have to go back on.

im glad to know that FFV heads work on non-FFV engines...i figured the PCM would be able to handle it, its only a few CC's difference. i would imagine the swap would probably work the other way around too...though you might get ever so slightly less mileage if running ethanol since the new head design was made to take advantage of the slow burning fuel.

you might actually notice a slight increase in power depending on the octane rating of the fuel you use. The FFV heads are smaller 47cc heads compared to the 49cc heads of a non FFV. The only potential problem i foresee is spark knock. Simply bump up the octane rating, i.e. 89 in lieu of 87.
