I have a 2005 3.0 auto with 188,000 miles. Up to this time, the best truck ever. It started misfiring at 186,000 and so far I have replaced:
-plugs
-wires
-crankshaft sensor
-camshaft synchronizer and sensor
-fuel filter
-my normally good humor
Also, the A/C unit is making grinding and groaning noises when starting up?
Any help greatly appreciated..

Any codes?

How are the coil(s?)?

CEL #PO304, haven't checked compression, coils, fuel pump, or IAC. It runs smooth for 1, 2 days and then idles lower and starts miss firing, and CEL #P0304- a vicious cycle driving me nuts. It runs great on the highway, crap in the city. Up to this point in 16 years not one problem...

That is the code for #4 missifre.

Double check the plug wires and you might try a different coil.

I would bet on a coilpack given the symptoms. Possibly an injector.

Given its intermittant id say its safe to rule out a compression/valvetrain issue.

on the AC issue, the clutch and coil can be replaced without messing with the refrigerant.
one nut in the center of the clutch disk, look for shims behind the disk.
the belt can be left on if just removing the disk.
then a snap ring holds the coil on.
the pulley with new bearings is also available.

I was thinking ignition coil too. People on here swear by Motorcraft but they are normally 50-60% more than the cheaper ones. I bought the cheapest one I could find for mine when it was acting up. Replaced it with a cheap Chinese coil pack and never had any issues and I had it on for over a year before I sold the truck so not all cheap ones are junk.

No one has mentioned if you made sure you put the plug wires in the right spot. Seems like a stupid thing to forget but people mess this up more than you can imagine.

Concerning the AC, I just recently had this done. The problem is the bearing in the pulley. pjtoledo is correct about not having to pull the compressor. His instructions about removal are also correct., (to reiterate, watch for those spacers), I purchaced the bearing from RockAuto for under $15. Just replace the bearing. Take that snap ring off and with a little "help", the pulley will come right off. As mentioned, you can buy the pulley and bearing. The setup together was a little rich for my blood.

I just threw it up as an example. Store brand was $70... I guess I would have to inquire about the warranty of both.

The only time my 2006 3.0 misfired, it was due to a cracked coil pack. The new coil is of the Standard brand.
