Has anyne our there done this. And if so are ther any major mods hat have to be done?

It wouldn't be that different from a 4.0 swap. The ultimate question would be why?
The 4.0 will bolt up the 2.9 tranny. The 3.0 will not.
The 4.0 has more power than a 3.0.
You would have to use a gen 2 ranger to be plug and play.
Even though you have a 2wd, it still has a 4wd tranny and a dummy tcase.
Anything can be done with enough time and money.

Agreed. Your effort would be much better put toward a 4.0L swap. '90-'92 Ranger 4.0L motors I understand are plug & play swaps on '89-'90 BIIs (of course you'd also want the 4.0L's transmission to go with it too though).

The 4.0 will shred an FM trans, his needs replaced anyway

3.0s tend to get better MPG than the 4.0

I've thought about it from time to time, and it may happen to my B2 eventually. I'm just not sure yet. My swap would be a hair more complicated.

3.0 gets better MPG than a 4.0? Yes, but BARELY, talking 1-2 MPG difference.

I found one for free but the guy backed out, so off to pullaparts I go

The slightly better mileage from a 3.0 over a 4.0 doesn't make up for the generally miserable experience of driving a 3.0.

Oh, and BTW, even though he has a 2wd Bronco2 he'll still need to replace the oil pan and pickup unless his donor 3.0 is from a 1993 or 94 Ranger.

The 1991-92 3.0 oil pan will not clear the 4x4 engine crossmember
that even a 2wd bronco2 has...
