2wd trans in a 4wd...

Yes, i know this question has been asked before.. but this is a little different, Needing another trans in my 2002 4x4 3.0 Ranger... but i'm not about to spend 1300 + to get it rebuilt ...........AGAIN... and all I can seem to find at the local yards is 2wd transmissions. Now i am aware that the tail housing/ shaft and what not can be swapped, but i'm really not interseted in doing that either.. I guess what i'm asking is can i just use the 2wd trans, and driveshaft from a 2wd .... making it a 2wd? I just really need to get the thing rolling .

The transmission cross member will not be the same, so you may have trouble with that. If you use the same transmission, albeit 2WD, it should work. The tailshaft of the tranny is different.

Although I have not done this myself, I dont know of the little intricacies or the wiring/ECU and timing of the transmisison. I would guess it'd be fine. Do you have the 5R55E?

it would be the 5r44e i believe.... I'm sure i could fab up something to fix the crossmember issue. and as far as the harness, i know i would have a constant '4wd' light blinking in my dash because of the tc case no longer being plugged up.. or there for that matter, but other than that i'm not really sure.

Yea. I wonder if theres a way to make the circuit in open loop, as 2WD. Honestly, I would just try to source a replacement.

You shouldn't have needed it rebuilt in the first place unless it has well over 200,000 miles on it, assuming you actually did the maintnence. Needing a second rebuild just means that whoever rebuilt it the first time did a miserable job. You'd be better off nabbing one out of a junkyard if you can find one under 100k. All the work thats required to use a 2wd you may as well convert to stick and be done with it.
