2WD to 4WD

I have a 93 Ford Ranger 2WD and i want to switch it over to a 4WD. My buddy has a parts truck that is 4WD but the frame is in iffy condition. He said something about being able to take the mounts off the cross member and welding them onto mine and then being able to go from there. Is this accurate or what am i looking at ??

You'll need to swap engine cross-members which requires at least lifting the engine off its mounts. A SAS is easier.
