I have an 86 ranger with a 2.0l 4 banger and am wanting to put a 2in suspension lift and either a 2/3in body lift will i be able to clear 33's with some cutting or and can my axles handle 31s or 33s
And how will this effect my gas mileage because this is my dd
this is going to be mainly street use so i'm not worried about performance just gas mileage and it's strictly for looks

Thanks

be prepared for high cost, and bad gas mileage. and my old '86 with the 2.0 (same truck) could barely move the stock tires! its a bad idea to do 33's with a 2liter! that 76hp or what ever it was is not fun..... even with a 140hp 3.0L is hard enough with 33's some times. tires your looking at about $500 plus install, body lift $100(at least), new rims $200 (for cheap steelies), suspension, with coil spacers and lift blocks, about another $100, plus allignment.
and i forgot gearing!!!! it would be a must!!! gears could go for about $50-$$$, plus install(very expensive)

how about 31s and i don't care about install and alignment my dad works at dealership and can get it alighned for free and as for install he's been a mechanic for 50 years. and i don't need a hot rod just something that will hit 55-60mph eventually

and where do you get $500 for a 2" lift and 3" body lift and i don't care about tire price i've go it covered form anywhere from 29-33"

thanks

p.s this is probably the suspension lift i'll use

i say lift it, buy some gears and ahve ur pop do them, run some 4.88's in the back ass end, and ull be pretty happy with the results.

then ull be able to run the 33's and still have SOMEHTING in the way of balls

lol my truck didn't have any balls when it was made it is 2.0l but hinks like i said i don't need a hot rod and i hope i can sell it off as slowing my truck down to mom. because my bro used to have 5.2 dodge and it scared her for my bro to have that much power

cain't wait til my truck at least look cool

sorry didn't mean to double post

but how bad will 31s or 33s effect my gas mileage

if you read my post, it says, around $500 for tires! around $100 for body lift, and around $100 for coil spacers (and bushings). not $500 for coil spacers and body lift.

even with 31's you will want to regear with the 4bangers. 4.56's for 31's, 4.88 or 5.13s for 33's. this will get you back to about stock power.

my old 87 2wd w/ the 2.3, 31's,5spd and 4.56's got a avg of 20mpg and I drove that thing like it was stolen.

where is everyone getting these gear ratios from? tis not 4wd its 2wd, hardocre v8 mustangers running 12's at teh track dont even run higher than 4.11:1, alot of them do 3.93's with 19 and 20 inch rims. I really dont understand this. Not just this post but alot of others, if there is sumthing Im missing fill me in.

You explained it yourself brotha, V8's and like 25" tall tires

Bigger tires will make the final ratio higher, resulting in lower power(especially with a 4 banger)

So to compensate for the bigger tires you add lower gears, to add power

Rim size has little to do with gearing. It's the OVERALL size of the rim/tire combo that matters. I am running 15" rims and the rear tires are 28" tall. I could run 17" rims and only have a tire that is 25" tall. Right now I love that I have 4.10's with the 28" tall tires, but if I install tires that are 25" tall I may not like how high my RPM's are at highway speeds.

Yeah, but unless you bobbed it and are running slicks, your most likely not going to have 28" to 33" tires on a Mustang, which is what I was generalizing...........

Although with 20" and 45 series, your lookin about 28" tall

True for a street 'stang, but racers will run 28" tires for sure. Plus remember different engines, most V-8 stangs will put out more power in stock trim VS the Rangers. Then after they are modded, the 'stang wins hands down. Gearing in the tranny plays a role as well. I don't know the 'stangs tranny gearing, but I would be surprised to find out that they were the same.

ohh I dont know. I only ran the 4.56 and 31 combo on a 2.3. and for some reason I was able to make use out of 5th.Able to keep the same clutch disc for 40,000 miles of trying to kill it driving.got a solid 20mpg no matter how or were I drove the truck.Had a little balls on the bottom end to get it moving quick if need be.
went to 33's on that truck with 4.88's and it was kinda lazy, l could live with it, but it was lazy.compared to the 31's and 4.56's and droped down to 17mpg.
And the 2.0 if stock is going to have less power than the 2.3 did.

a 2.0 4banger in a brick of a ranger is no 500hp small block in a 3,00lb stang with 25-28inch tires.

if you want to get a ideal of what a set of 3.73 would be like with 31, start off in 2nd,short shift it in to 3rd(cause that what 3rd will feel like wiht 31's after you reved the crap out of 2nd), take 3rd for everything you got and drop it in 5th and try to pick up speed at a healthy pas...what your 5th feels like is what 4th will feel like with 31's
