Not sure if this is a Engine question or more of a suspension question but here goes. Who is running 33's with a 4 cylinder? Is it a dog trying to turn the heavy tires? What gears do you run? I'm looking at a stock 95 with 4 cyl. and 5 speed with 110K miles, and am wondering how this combo will work. Not looking for a speed demon, or trying to haul a ton. And can I hit 20MPG highway?

Thanks!

If you run 5.13 gears you'll probably be ok. I've got 31's with the 4-banger and 4.56 gears. It works great.

Really! What is stock gearing on the 4 cyl. 2wd 5 speed? I was hoping to go 4.56 with the 33's.

Well my stock gearing was 3.73.

It's just that we can't get away with as much as these guys with larger displacement engines. These little 4-bangers need all the help they can get to sling bigger rubber. I think I could run 33's no problem with the gearing I have as my speedo is off by about 2mph on the fast side. When I'm going an actual 40mph the speedo says 42.

This leads me to believe I could run 33's without any problems, but as a personal preference I would go 5.13's with anything 33" or larger on my 4-banger.

with a 6 in lift, 513 gears and LIGHT AT TYPE 33'S.....a strong 4 wheezer could see 20's hiway.

high teens town. unloaded of course.

Yeah, you're right!

I get 25 in mine all the time with the setup I have. I'm not lead-footing it though, and it sees mostly freeway/highway miles.

with my truck i get 23 on the highway when i went to college, the best i ever got was 25 once. Now i average 17-18 on the backroads by my house.

I found a set of 4.88's. Would be about 100 RPM more than a stock tire with
3.73 gears.

if you found a rear end alredy set up with 4.88;s at a price that cant pass up..100-200 bucks for a 7.5 etc. they are doable. but I think you would be better off with the 5.13's for 33's wiht the 4banger.and if your going to pay the price to regear the currnet axle..................

and bet you would be in the 18-20 mile range.with a "crusie" speed of 70-75

Id take the bet and say with 4.88's would be about the same gas millage wise, just 3rd gear will be alittle more lazy.and 5th will be sorta in and out if you have long grades to climb.

My old 87 2.3 5spd w/31's and 4.56 got 20.no matter how I drove it. And I drove that thing like a 2stroke most the time, wound up and screaming.

Ive just been looking at gear sets for sale. Well if stock gears are 3.73 going to 5.13 will be a 300 RPM increase. While 4.88 gears is about a 150 RPM increase. So I dunno about the high RPM's while on freeway. I dont mind downshifting to 4th on grades. But if I have to hit 3rd on a hill then ya I would rather have more gear. In the 4 banger forum theres a guy running a '97 2.3 with 33's and 4.56 gears.
