Hey guys a 4.0l v6 2wd xlt ranger and had bought it a coulple years ago needing a transmission and ended up buying a reman trans. Im faced with a delema I have recently bought a car and now the truck sits and I want to make a 4x4 toy out of it as I already have a closed knuckle dana 44 and dana 60 rear axle out a 73 f250 along with a set of 35" tires and rims that I got all for free that I would like to do a SAS.
The problem being its only a 2wd trans I was woundering if I could just replace my tail cone with a transfercase? I had my old trans apart and saw that large portion of the shaft covered by the tail cone was splined like it would work with both.
Just hoping that I dont have to part with my shiny and expensive reman trans as it was imposible to find a working one at a salvage yard that didnt have 300k on it or wasn't blown up.
Also can I swap to an auto if the trans wont work they seem to be a dime a dozen and easy to find being that during my weeks long crawl through some of my states finest salvage yards looking for a golden ticket it seemed that all I could find was auto 4.0L 4x4 transmissions.

Thanks guys any help is greatly apreciated

Anyone have an idea? Just want to know if I can add a transfer case to my 2ad trans? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

4wd tailshaft, aka mainshaft, and 4x4 "adapter" tailhousing and whichever t-case u want...btw i got a 1350 man case for sale if interested

IT won't work.

The 4x4 outpiut shaft is shorter and a different spline.

It would've made sense to make the shafts the same but it seems nobody at ford (or any other mfg) was intelligent enough to think of doing it that way...

closed knuckle dana 44 out of an F250 is probably the weakest link. and your dana 60 is a coarse spline. if you had saved the remote mount Tcase that might have been usable but it was a dana 24 and had coarse spline shafts(weak)

basically those axles are junk. sorry about the brutal honesty:sad:
your average worn out 4L Ranger 4x4 has stronger parts.

I wouldn't waste your time with the antique parts.
infact I just took a 94 explore in for scrap with a 8.8" 31 spline rear and a dana 35 front in it. got a whole $240 for it.

good luck with your 4wd project, just don't use those axles.

I have to agree with these guys.I am in the same situation.I have a 2001 with a 4r44e and I wanna go 4x4 and run an XJ D30 with 34x9.50 tires. All I need is the 4r44e 4x4 trans and a manual shift 1354.You could probably ditch your current axles on CL and get newer units from a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.Your axles could probably be built up,but it would cost way more than a good JY set and be just as strong.I'm not building a hard core truck, just something to get me around in the winter when the roads are covered with ice and snow.
