2nd gen headliner in 1st gen?

I got a headliner for a 1991, to put in my 88 extended cab and I'm having trouble getting it to line up. I thought the 2nd gen headliner would go right in but the actual headliner is blocking the holes. Any suggestions. ? Thanks!
