It's possible that this is a very retarded question, but I'm gonna ask anyhow.

Does anyone know if Atlas or someone else makes a transfer case with only 2LO selections?

My truck's 2WD (don't be hatin') and I had been throwing around the idea of SAS with a divorced t-case but I've pretty much talked myself out of that because I don't anticipate doing any hardcore off roading. But the truck will have plenty of opportunity to become stuck in the sand so I thought (again, could be retarded) if I had more of a capability to "crawl" I might fare better with the sand monster. Yes, I'm planning on regearing when I change tire sizes and suspension setups, I was just wondering if having the ability to select a lower 2WD gear would change anything.

There is a MUCH cheaper solution than anything Atlas makes.

Buy a pair of good manual locking hubs and hub nuts from the junkyard that match your straight axle. Leave them open and 4LO = 2LO. I do this on my Exploder all the time.

Frankly, there really isn't any point making something you can buy very cheaply. You're describing some models of Cherokee or Bronco.

MAKG's advice is good.....manual locking hubs give you "simulated" 2-wheel low range. I say simulated because the front shafts are still spinning but the wheels are not connected to them.

If you want true 2LO, you can build a doubler case. This is a transfer case that has only the planetary gearset remaining and sits between the tranny and t-case. It provides the driver with true 2LO which can be more beneficial than the locking hub option. (e.g. you blow something out on your front end and don't want to spin it, yet you want to get off the trail with good gearing options)

If you have a 2-piece shaft connecting the doubler to the t-case, you want to avoid wide open throttle with the doubler in LO and t-case in HI. This puts excessive strain on the shaft and can cause it to snap.

A doubler is a lot of money and work (and more to go wrong), so for most manual hubs are the best option and work great.

Could I find a 4x4 t-case from a junkyard and buy a 2 lo shift kit that would match that t-case? Then I'd just have to figure how to mate it to the tranny?

You can get an underdrive unit, no idea if there are any adapters made to ranger transmissions.

well if you only have 2wd you can install a 4x4 transmission and a t-case and run it in 2wd then just shift into low and have 2wd low range. just use a manual t-case and you wont anything to deal with.

Precisely.

Get a 4wd tranny and t-case, bolt it up, and have 2-lo.
