Is there any difference between the clutches in a 28 and 31 spline trac loc? I want to put a 31 spline carrier in my 8.8 that currently has a 28 spline. I would like to swap the clutches from the 28 to the 31. Can I do this?

You can't put a 31 spline carrier in place of a 28 spline carrier without having custom axle shafts made. Just will not work.

I forgot to include all the info. I'm taking a 31 spline posi from an Explorer axle and putting it in a Mercury Marauder
(Grand Marquis), with a 28 spline carrier. The 31 will fit in the 28 spline car axle, but I was told the clutches from the 28 won't fit in the 31. I don't exactly buy that. Aftermarket clutch kits and Ford clutch kits advertise that they fit in 28 or 31 spline carriers. If the swap won't work, I'll put the whole Explorer axle in my 91 Ranger. Thanks for any help!

it wont work put the whole axle in. the axle shafts are smaller on the 28 spines IIRC. but i know you cant mix the 31 spline and 28 spline

Could it be that the Clutch basket/Center section in the 31 and 28 are the same minus the Axel Spider gears?
I'm kinda running into the same question on a 9" in my 81.I want to find a Trac-loc center to rebuild with 3.73 gears but the truck has the small bearing in it now and all I seem to find is big bearing rears.I have had several people tell me all I have to do is swap the gears on the Axel????????

With a 9" and the removable center, yep just have to replace the gears. That's one reason a lot of people like them, just have an extra center chunk for different applications. You wanting to change the splines also or just gear ratio? Best info here:http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm

Thank You Sir for the link.
Just the Gear set.
I have 3.42 (hard to tell the tag is fubar) in it now.
